Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI)

TAVI is a procedure which was first done by Dr. Alain Cribier. It is a procedure today that is done under conscious Sedation without general Anesthesia. It is done for people with Severe Aortic Stenosis.

It has been compared to surgical replacement of Aortic Valve and as of now, has been found to be equivalent or superior to surgical aortic valve replacement. TAVI is an alternative to open-heart aortic valve replacement surgery. People who have TAVI often have a shorter hospital stay than those who have surgical aortic valve replacement. It was initially only used in the high surgical risk patients but today with the newer data it is also used in intermediate and low surgical risk patients.

Your doctor may recommend TAVI if you have:

  • Severe aortic stenosis that causes signs and symptoms.
  • A biological tissue aortic valve that isn't working as well as it should.
  • Another health condition, such as lung or kidney disease, that makes open-heart valve replacement surgery too risky.

Holy Family Hospital is proud to announce that Dr. Brian Pinto, Director of Cardiology & Cardio Vascular Services has successfully done a number of these procedures.
